Training of national scientists in different aspects of rice research and extension as well as in rice-based cropping systems is an integral part of the International Rice Research Institute’s (IRRI) continuing research efforts (IRRI 1983).
Slash-and-burn agriculture is considered to be one of the oldest land-use systems (Spencer 1966). Although the practice has long disappeared in temperate regions, it is still common in tropical and subtropical areas and is said to be practiced by at least 300 million people, involving up to 30% of the global exploitable soils (Warner 1991).
